    The sidereal anisotropy of cosmic rays around 3 x 10 (15) eV observed at a middle north latitude

    The sidereal time variation of cosmic rays (median primary energy : 3 10 to the 15th power eV) is investigated with air shower observations at Akeno, Japan (900 m a.s.l.) which started in September 1981. Air showers are detected by a coincidence requirement on several muon detectors. The result obtained for three years is suggestive of a big semi-diurnal variation (0.37 % in amplitude). On the other hand, the diurnal variation is rather small than the semi-diurnal one. The feature of the sidereal anisotropy supposed from the present result looks quite different from that below 10 to the 14th power eV

    Stimulation of hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy by infusion of a cytosol extract from regenerating dog liver

    A cytosol liver extract was prepared from adult dog livers and from liver remnants that had been regenerating for one, two and three days after 72 per cent partial hepatectomy. Given intraportally, the most active of these cytosols did not stimulate proliferation in the livers of normal dogs. However, infused during a six hour period into the portal vein of test group dogs, the cytosol from 48 and, especially, 72 hour regenerating livers augmented the regeneration response ordinarily produced by 44 per cent partial hepatectomy. The effect was delayed. It became identifiable 48 hours after infusion and reached a peak at 72 hours. Neither augmentation nor significant inhibition of the normal regeneration response was produced by cytosol from normal liver and 24 hour regenerating liver or by a six hour infusion of insulin. The amplification effect of active cytosol was equivocal when the infusions were given intraperitoneally and was not demonstrable at all by the intravenous route. In these investigations, it is confirmed that there are growth control factors in regenerating liver but the nature or physiologic significance of the factor or factors has not been clarified

    With the use of Akeno calorimeter, the attenuation of particles in concrete is analyzed as the function of the shower size of 10 to the 5th power to 10 to the 7th power. The attenuation length does not depend much on the shower size but depends a little on the shower age. The average value is approx. 150 g/sq cm for s = 0.5 to 0.85 and approx. 40 g/sq cm for s = 0.85 to 1.15. These values and their fluctuations are consistent with the equi-intensity curves of extensive air showers (EAS)

    Development of Atmospheric Monitoring System at Akeno Observatory for the Telescope Array Project

    We have developed an atmospheric monitoring system for the Telescope Array experiment at Akeno Observatory. It consists of a Nd:YAG laser with an alt-azimuth shooting system and a small light receiver. This system is installed inside an air conditioned weather-proof dome. All parts, including the dome, laser, shooter, receiver, and optical devices are fully controlled by a personal computer utilizing the Linux operating system. It is now operated as a back-scattering LIDAR System. For the Telescope Array experiment, to estimate energy reliably and to obtain the correct shower development profile, the light transmittance in the atmosphere needs to be calibrated with high accuracy. Based on observational results using this monitoring system, we consider this LIDAR to be a very powerful technique for Telescope Array experiments.     Probing Exotic Physics With Cosmic Neutrinos

    Traditionally, collider experiments have been the primary tool used in searching for particle physics beyond the Standard Model. In this talk, I will discuss alternative approaches for exploring exotic physics scenarios using high energy and ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos. Such neutrinos can be used to study interactions at energies higher, and over baselines longer, than those accessible to colliders. In this way, neutrino astronomy can provide a window into fundamental physics which is highly complementary to collider techniques. I will discuss the role of neutrino astronomy in fundamental physics, considering the use of such techniques in studying several specific scenarios including low scale gravity models, Standard Model electroweak instanton induced interactions, decaying neutrinos and quantum decoherence.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; For the proceedings of From Colliders To Cosmic Rays, Prague, Czech Republic, September 7-13, 200

    Measurement of energy muons in EAS at energy region larger thean 10(17) eV

    A measurement of low energy muons in extensive air showers (EAS) (threshold energies are 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.38 GeV) was carried out. The density under the concrete shielding equivalent to 0.25 GeV at core distance less than 500 m and 0.5 GeV less than 150 m suffers contamination of electromagnetic components. Therefore the thickness of concrete shielding for muon detectors for the giant air shower array is determined to be 0.5 GeV equivalence. Effects of photoproduced muons are found to be negligible in the examined ranges of shower sizes and core distances. The fluctuation of the muon density in 90 sq m is at most 25% between 200 m and 600 m from the core around 10 to the 17th power eV

    Exogenously added naphthols induce three glucosyltransferases, and are accumulated as glucosides in tobacco cells

    Plants detoxify and accumulate several compounds as glucosides. In this work, detoxification of the exogenously added harmful compound naphthol in tobacco cells (Nicotiana tabacum L. Bright Yellow) was studied. When 250 μM of 1-naphthol or 2-naphthol was added to the tobacco cells, most of the naphthol was accumulated in the cell as glucosides and in further modified forms. The glucosylation activities against naphthols were increased in proportion to the concentration of naphthols in the culture medium. Addition of 1 mM naphthols caused cell death. Three glucosyltransferase genes, namely NtGT1a, NtGT1b and NtGT3 were isolated and characterized. The recombinant enzymes encoded by these genes showed glucosylation activity against naphthols and other phenolic compounds. It was also shown that these genes were induced following the addition of naphthols to the tobacco cells. These results suggest that naphthols are metabolized by glucosyltransferases whose production is inducible by naphthol itself.ArticlePlant Science. 164(2):231-240 (2003)journal articl

    A new method to search for a cosmic ray dipole anisotropy

    We propose a new method to determine the dipole (and quadrupole) component of a distribution of cosmic ray arrival directions, which can be applied when there is partial sky coverage and/or inhomogeneous exposure. In its simplest version it requires that the exposure only depends on the declination, but it can be easily extended to the case of a small amplitude modulation in right ascension. The method essentially combines a χ2\chi^2 minimization of the distribution in declination to obtain the multipolar components along the North-South axis and a harmonic Rayleigh analysis for the components involving the right ascension direction

    Ultra high energy gamma rays produce electron--positron pairs in interactions on the geomagnetic field. The pair electrons suffer magnetic bremsstrahlung and the energy of the primary gamma ray is shared by a bunch of lower energy secondaries. These processes reflect the structure of the geomagnetic field and cause experimentally observable effects.
